The API Risk-Based Inspection Project (RBI) began in 1993 to define and quantify the risk of process equipment failure. The methodology resulting from this project is an effective tool for managing many of the important elements of a refining and petrochemical process facility. The results of this project are published in API Publication 581, Risk-Based Inspection Base Resource Document. An accompanying software package was developed to provide an efficient mode of applying the methodology in an individual unit or plant.

The original member companies of this project formed the API Risk-Based Inspection Software User Group in 2000. The User Group consists of companies that use the API RBI software in their facilities or provide RBI services to the industry. The User Group is a vital link in enabling API to provide quality software and form partnerships with the refining and chemical process industry for training, application development, and most importantly, direct communication with the user base. The future viability of the API RBI software is dependent on the direction and support provided by the User Group.

The User Group is organized and administered by the API Standards Department. The User Group is a forum for offering product demos, tips on increasing productivity, and shared insights from other RBI practitioners. Most importantly, the User Group establishes the direction and priority of future upgrades and enhancements, and provides direct feedback to the software developer. Members can also receive techical support for questions that arise during application of the software. The User Group is a professional-development opportunity, providing a forum in which to help members share information and boost job productivity. Active members will receive free software upgrades.
