Welcome to the API Subcommittee on Aboveground Storage Tanks (AST) web page. The ASTprovides an important service to the refining, marketing, pipeline and petrochemical industry by providing recommended practices and minimum construction, inspection and repair standards for aboveground storage tanks. API's tank standards are also used in the pulp and paper, utilities, food processing, fertilizer, and other process-related industries. The AST's portfolio of standards include:

  • Std 620 - Design and Construction of Large, Welded, Low-Pressure Storage Tanks
  • Std 650 - Welded Steel Tanks for Oil Storage
  • Std 653 - Tank Inspection, Repair, Alteration, and Reconstruction

Floating Roof Integrity Task Group site

These standards draw from the synergy of a high level of technical expertise and a long history of experience. The tank standards benefit large owner/operators by providing the perspective and experience of other companies. Small companies gain expertise that would not be practically available otherwise. All companies benefit from proactively following industry standards developed using a consensus process.
