API and IPIECA (International Petroleum Industry Environmental and Conservation Association) have undertaken a new environmental, health and safety reporting initiative to develop a tool that companies and associations within the oil and gas industry can use to improve the quality, scope and completeness of reporting in a manner that strives to meet the needs of key stakeholders. IPIECA’s Strategic Issues Assessment Forum established a task force to lead a “Joint Corporate Reporting Compendium Project” that will characterize the current state for both EHS and sustainability reporting.

The project’s overall objectives are to:

- Help stimulate exchange of information between companies and industry associations on both EHS and sustainability reporting practices;

- Identify company performance indicators, reporting practices and policies; and

- Enhance the understanding of stakeholder expectation in corporate reporting.

The main product of this initiative will be an “evergreen” web-based compendium that helps companies continuously monitor where they stand with respect to EHS and social responsibility reporting trends. The compendium will provide information about EHS and sustainability reporting policies, practices, and performance indicator definitions, and provide a context for comparison with other guidance publications, such as the Global Reporting Initiative. This project is expected to conclude during the latter half of 2002 with a workshop during which the results and recommendations for further efforts will be discussed.
