1.    Proposed Project Team / Study Name

Project Name: UOM Standard

2.    Description

2.1 Purpose

The purpose of this project is to determine which of two UOM standards should be endorsed as the official PIDX standard:  UN/ECE or ANSI.  Currently, PIDX endorses both standards but as we move forward with both transactions and catalogs, it will become increasingly important to comply with a single standard.

2.2 Scope

  1. Gap analysis between UN/ECE and ANSI standards – overlap, missing, etc.
  2. Individual company analyses of UOM standard/proprietary usage and requirements
  3. Define PIDX goals with respect to global adoption/international requirements and with respect to other industry standards organizations with respect to UOM standardization
  4. List of UOMs to be requested of appropriate standards organizations

2.3 Goal

This initiative is being undertaken with the goal of increasing adoption of PIDX standards for transactions and reducing complexity of catalog implementations as we expect electronic catalogs to figure more prominently in the procure-to-payment process.  Competing standards add complexity and ambiguity to implementations.
